  • The only road works I have been notified about for this weekend is temporary traffic lights to control single line working in Oxford High Street on Sunday 22nd Marchfrom “off peak for about 5 hours duration” so presumably starting around 0800 – 0900 and until lunchtime? This will be in the vicinity of the pedestrian crossing between our Turl Street stop and the Queens Lane bus stops.

Then from Monday 23rd March there will be temporary traffic lights controlling single line working at the junction of Norfolk Street and Castle Street in Oxford City Centre, so only affecting journeys towards Oxford Rail Station. These will last for an estimated 6 weeks until 29th April. Being bus only roads the delays should not be very much

Timing changes throughout.

  • Castle Street in Oxford will be closed for three consecutive nights from 23:00 until 05:30 the following morning on Sunday 8 March; Monday 9 March & Tuesday 10 March, due to a crane working on site.

Buses toward Oxford Rail Station will need to divert from Speedwell Street via Thames Street, Oxpens Road and Hollybush Row to Frideswide Square and Rail Station. Buses from the Rail Station are not affected.

This will only affect the last bus on Monday & Tuesday night – although the Sunday last bus should probably divert in case the closure starts a few minutes early.

  • Due to the annual running event in Milton Keynes on Sunday 8th March, service 150 will need to divert from first bus through until 1130.

To MK Rail Station from Saxon Street turn right into Standing Way, past Hospital, left into Marlborough Street, right into Childs Way, left into Enmore Gate, left into Avebury Boulevard, right into Marlborough Gate, left into Midsummer Boulevard, serve stop B4 by Food Centre, right into Secklow Gate, left into Silbury Boulevard, left into Saxon Gate and right into Midsummer Boulevard and as normal to Rail Station. From Rail Station reverse of the outward diversion route back, serving stop B3 in Midsummer Boulevard by the Food Centre, then as reverse of outward back to Standing Way and Saxon Street.

Thus the main stops at Milton Keynes will not be served, stops B4 and B3 by the Food Centre being used instead.

Hockliffe Street in Leighton Buzzard will be closed for gas works between the High Street and Lesons Road from 0800 until 1630 each day from Monday 9th March until Friday 13th March.

Eastbound services 32/33/34/35 and 150 will need to carry on straight ahead into Lake Street, serving buss top there if required and then turn right [34/5 and 150] into Lesons Road and then to normal route at the next roundabout

  • Frideswide Square in Oxford, adjacent to the Rail Station, is to undergo a major change of layout and face lift from Monday 16th February, lasting through to December 2015.

To summarise, the traffic lights will be replaced with mini roundabouts, all traffic will pass through the current bus – only area and our bus stops will be moved from the Square into Park End Street.

For now I will deal with the first two phases of work and then update before each new phase commences.

From Monday 16th February for one week, mainly overnight work will occur [overnight = 20:00 start or even 19:00 in some cases!] to remove the current traffic lights and install temporary lights which will be set to the same operational pattern as the current ones, but will have a manual override during the daytime. The traffic islands will be removed and mini roundabouts and the necessary signage constructed. There will be no change to route or stops during this week.

From Monday 23rd February until further notice [“July” is the estimate given] all traffic will be diverted through the current bus only road, the bus stops will be removed and the new roundabouts introduced – one at the junction of Park End Street/Hollybush Row/Frideswide Square, another at the Botley Road/Station access/Frideswide Square junction and a third [not affecting us] at the junction of Hythe Bridge Street/Rewley Road/Frideswide Square. The temporary traffic lights will be switched off but will remain in place in case they need to be used whilst the changes “settle down”.

The 280 will no longer stop in Frideswide Square but will now serve bus stops in Park End Street in both directions. That going to the Rail Station will be permanent and will replace stop E7 outside Las Iguanas as well as the Frideswide Square stop and will be sited immediately before the junction with Hollybush Row. That towards the City Centre will be sited outside Staples Office Supplies building as a temporary measure.

Delays can be expected, especially during the first week or so. Extra time was allowed for in the November timetable change but this was mainly for Headington roadworks [finishing end of April]. There will be further additional time added in from the next timetable change on the 280, provisionally 19th April, which will include a large increase in time in the morning peak.

    Further updates as work progresses.
